Colds, flus, illnesses, and injuries almost always have emotional and spiritual meaning. We get sick to detox old emotions and get closer to our true selves. An injury could be a sign to slow down, and a form of protection from getting burned out.

Western medicine doesn’t always know how to effectively and safely address the invisible sides of these conditions.

There’s a form of alternative medicine that does address the emotional and spiritual sides of illness and injury: It’s called homeopathy, and it’s a natural class of medicine based on plants and minerals.

It was created by Samuel Hahnemann in 1796, and hundreds of my patients have experienced relief from it when nothing else was working.  There are three popular homeopathic remedies I recommend to clients, especially with cold and flu season coming up.

In the meantime, I hope these three remedies help you this fall and winter*…

  • Oscillococcinum.

Protects against colds and flu. Take one dose per day during the fall and winter for immune system maintenance.
  • Gelsemium.

Great for lowering anxiety, preventing headaches, and reducing asthma symptoms.
  • Bryonia.

Prevents fever, fatigue, and irritability. It was the top medicine used during the Avian Flu Pandemic in 1918.
  • Nux Vomica.

Helps with constipation, bloating, nausea, vomiting, and weak immunity. It’s excellent for hangovers, too.

French pharmacists are trained in homeopathy. When you go to the pharmacy in the South of France (I was there recently), traditional pharmacists recommend homeopathic remedies for all different types of conditions.

Here in the United States, it’s less common – you can walk into some health food stores and buy homeopathic remedies off the shelf, but you won’t find many doctors who recommend these little white pills.

Homeopathy is underutilized because physicians aren’t trained in it.

So how does homeopathy work?

It brings the physical, spiritual, and emotional sides of you back into balance using a small amount of different plants and minerals for different conditions.

The premise is that the body can heal itself, and that tiny amounts of the same substance that causes illness in healthy patients can heal that same illness in sick people.

The great thing about homeopathy is that it has no contraindications, no drug interactions, and no allergens. It’s safe for kids, elderly people, and everyone in between. And it’s also very inexpensive.

*Always check with your primary doctor before taking a new medication or supplement.

But you need to know how to use homeopathy: More isn’t better. In many circumstances, less is better.

It’s best to consult a trained practitioner of homeopathy, and always get approval from your primary care physician before taking any supplements or medication.

I’m trained by the CEDH, and therefore understand when and how to use homeopathy alongside other treatments.

Homeopathy is one of the most effective classes of complementary medicine for preventing colds and flu, in my opinion. There are homeopathic remedies that exist where there is no effective or harmless drug, which is very exciting.

If you’re tired of getting sick every fall and winter, look into homeopathy.
