Many of us will reach a point in our life, when we’ll reflect on what we have and what we’ve accomplished and many of us will be unsatisfied with what we observe. In fact, according to the results of a 2013 Harris Poll, only 30% and 36% of adults ages 40-49 and 50-64, respectively, reported themselves “very happy.” When you consider that many people at these stages in their lives are hesitant or unable to make changes, they may also find themselves at the hands of unhappiness and stress and unable to age with the grace they once imagined.
As a certified health coach, I help patients every day to overcome that mental obstacle of change and to begin to live the life they want – physically and spiritually. If this sounds ideal to you, here are four simple recommendations to help you do the same:
- Exercise. Physical activity releases endorphins, which help ease depression and anxiety. Slowly make exercise a regular part of your routine and improve your outlook on an ongoing basis.
- Eat healthy. The saying “you are what you eat” is true. By eating unhealthy foods, you are putting toxins in your body, which promote a toxic attitude. Work fruits and vegetables into your diet to be healthier and happier.
- Be social. A 15-year Australian study published in 2006 demonstrated that individuals with “strong social networks” lived longer than subjects without them. A great way to make friends and go for an extended life is through volunteering. (Read more here.)
- Be positive. If there’s something you want to do, tell yourself you can do it, and you’ll soon believe it. Furthermore, minimize interaction with negative people who don’t encourage your goals and happiness. These are not the kinds of friends who will extend your life.
Try one of these at a time until you realize a difference, and then you’ll feel empowered to tackle another. If you still feel unable to make the changes you want to see, let me help. It’s never too late to live the life you want.
