weight-lossA new study suggests hanging out with thinner people to lose more weight.

In a survey of more than 9,300 Americans from the ages 18-65, overweight individuals who want to lose weight are less likely to make weight loss progress if they only spend time with other obese people.

A person might be more comfortable with peers of the same weight. However, there’s a higher chance of shedding unwanted pounds if thinner people are in their social circles, according to research published in the journal Obesity.

If you want to slim down, spend time with those who work out regularly. Current studies don’t exactly show the association because the study didn’t prove a particular link.

Study author, Matthew Anderson said, “What we don’t know is what respondents are doing with their social contacts, whether through texting, in person or on social media. They might be going out to eat; they might be going to the gym; they might be doing something totally unrelated. We just don’t know.”

Anderson added in a news release from Baylor University, where he is an assistant professor of sociology, “Also, the desire to lose weight in itself may be linked to other health traits, such as whether they smoke.”

If you surround yourself with people who will encourage you to become a better version of yourself, you will be inspired to work out.  A group of friends who have helpful personalities will only support you in your endeavors.

Hopefully, more research will surface and shine a light on the relationship between weight loss and the friends a person spends time with.

To get the best results, surround yourself with individuals willing to be there for you every step of the way!
