There may be. According to a 2015 study, there appears to be a link between high levels of fluoride in drinking water and an increased risk for hypothyroidism. The study raises many concerns regarding the prevalence of water fluoridation as a safe health measure.
The report was published on the 24th of February 2015 in the journal of Epidemiology and Community Health. It discussed the very first population-level study investigating the relationship between fluoride levels in drinking water and the instance of hypothyroidism.
Hypothyroidism and Thyroid Hormones
Hypothyroidism, also known as underactive thyroid, is the condition where the thyroid isn’t creating sufficient thyroid hormone. The thyroid hormone is in charge of regulating the body’s use of energy. Without the sufficient amount of thyroid hormone, the body’s normal functions slow down.
The researchers conducted a comparison between Greater Manchester, a non-fluoridated area (0.3mg/L fluoride or less), and West Midlands, a completely fluoridated area (at least 0.7 mg/L fluoride). They found out that West Midlands had twice the risk for hypothyroidism.
Professor Stephen Peckham, University of Kent, told Medscape Medical News, “I think the results clearly demonstrate an increased risk of hypothyroidism associated with areas of (high) water fluoridation.” He added that the study also “raises questions about the safety of community fluoridation.”
Thankfully, many communities across the globe have been removing fluoride from their drinking water. Some may think that water fluoridation is a form of mass medication to the public. But the public has a right to know and control what they are drinking.
Drinking water is the world’s most important resource because it is essential to every single person on this planet. It is remarkable how much we can find out when we question the things around us. Think twice before drinking water with high fluoride levels.
