This week’s Thumbs Up goes to Slow Food San Francisco for supporting a vertical garden at Sanchez Elementary School in the city’s Mission District. Recently unveiled, the soil-less garden is the first of its kind in the city.
“Gardening is therapeutic and good for mind, body and spirit,” Dr. Veronica says.
Spinach, bok choy, spearmint, parsley, celery and kale are just a few of foods growing in the garden, which is mounted on a chain-link fence and the ideal option for campuses where space is a concern. It’s also easy on the environment thanks to solar panels and a wind turbine that power the circulation of nutrient-enhanced water. Sanchez already had a traditional garden.
At Sanchez, 70 percent of the students are learning English as a second language with a high number coming from Spanish-speaking homes. Also, a significant number have learning disabilities and are in special education.
“This is something that we should have all over the United States,” Dr. Veronica says. “All schools should have this.”
