A bionic eye lens is not just a futuristic TV fantasy any longer!

The new bionic lens, named Ocumetics Bionic Lens, is being developed by Dr. Garth Webb, an optometrist in British Columbia. He was looking for a solution to optimize a person’s eyesight regardless of health or age.

This remarkable lens could correct a person’s vision to 20/20, ending the need for glasses, progressive lenses, and contacts. This advancement will change the eye care industry for good, CBC reports.

Moreover, people who get the lens surgically inserted will never get cataracts. The lens replaces the natural eye lens which decays over time.

Webb says, anyone over the age of 25 is a candidate because of their fully developed eyes.

He explained, “This is vision enhancement that the world has never seen before. If you can just barely see the clock at 10 feet, when you get the bionic lens, you can see the clock at 30 feet away.”

8-Minute Painless Surgery

Webb says the surgery is a mere 8 minutes. The surgery immediately corrects human vision, so it is sort of a miracle.

This project started eight years ago, costing over $3 million in research, according to Webb. His mission is driven by his obsession to free himself and others from corrective lenses.

Webb presented the lens to the 14 top ophthalmologists in San Diego during a meeting of the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery. Top surgeons from all around the world were intrigued by this new design.

Clinical Trials

In the next two years, clinical trials on animals and then blind human eyes will begin in Canada and different parts of the globe, so it will not be long before this amazing breakthrough is available.

The big difference between this new procedure and laser surgery is it doesn’t require the burning away of healthy corneal tissue. Nor does it lead to complications with glare, night-time vision and later cataracs. Webb is hopeful his lens will make laser eye surgery obsolete.

He also believes his bionic lens will be more beneficial to people with eye problems. Celebration of Sight is a foundation set up by Webb along with his bionic lens venture. This foundation donates money to organizations dedicated to providing eye surgery in developing countries in an effort to improve their quality of life. “Perfect eyesight should be a human right,” Webb stated.

Would someone you know benefit from a bionic lens?

It definitely looks like the future of eye care is upon us. And, the wait is almost over.
