Dr. Veronica: Running off and having bathroom breaks?
Russell: Yeah. I’ve really gotten it under control.
Dr. Veronica: We finally got him potty trained. Just like I’m getting my dogs potty trained, so I finally got Russell potty trained so he can stay with us a little bit.
But when I say I have a guru on, I love medical topics and I’m geeky at that. And I love when I meet somebody who’s just been all over the place, all around the world, and has helped lots and lots of people in all different kinds of ways. And that is what Dr. Chris Gilbert has done, drchrisgilbert.com is where you can find her.
I know a lot of people listen on the web. And so here is her mission. Dedicated to relieving pain and suffering of people from all around the world. Dedicated to relieving pain and suffering of people from all around the world. I have to say this, if I think about a great mission that is it. And if I’ve also think about a journey that I am on personally I would think that would be it too, dedicated to relieving pain and suffering from people all around the world.
I say that because at this point in time what I do, I was drawn into by people from the other side of the world. I had basically quit doing pretty much anything medical. I do my show every once in a while. But now I’m back full force with more offerings, especially my medical intuitive side, to help people and help relieve pain and suffering in people. I’ve seen other ways of doing it, and those like Dr. Chris Gilbert keep our minds open as to how we can help people, even with our medical backgrounds.
Dr. Gilbert, she’s worked with Doctors Without Borders. She’s been in California, France, Africa, Asia, and all those different pieces. And interesting aside, Russell and Dr. Gilbert would like this one too, my husband’s family, a lot of them are in France. His mother and father were in France for quite a while and worked there.
And so, although my husband grew up mostly in West Africa, spent some time in France, his oldest sister who lives in France and is a nurse, interestingly his oldest sister doesn’t really talk to her youngest sister because they’re from two different mothers and you know how there’s that family strife, guess what, they’re both nurses in France. Same family but they don’t talk to each other because there’s still that family strife going on.
But the oldest sister has said to my husband, “By the way brother, I believe you’re entitled to a French citizenship. Why don’t you do the paperwork so you could have a French citizenship. And by the way, because you get a French citizenship.” And this has to do with his parents having lived and worked there and everything like that. Although they both ended up back in Africa. “By the way, your wife, that’d be me Dr. Veronica, likely is also entitled to have this.”
I’ve always been interested in living in another part of the world. I’ve been in America I’ve been all around. I go to France frequently now with my husband and visit his family. And we’re headed back there again this year. So I might end up in France on the other part of my life. And so I run into people like Dr. Gilbert and other great people because they really are more open-minded. I’m now trained in homeopathy. And in France it’s a big thing. And the doctor who trained me who happens to be an eye surgeon also by training, who’s the head of the CEDA, she does the homeopathy training, a French gentleman.
I want to welcome on to the show Dr. Chris Gilbert. Dr. Gilbert, welcome to Wellness for the Real World.
Dr. Chris: Thank you so much Dr. Veronica. Thank for having me on your show.
Dr. Veronica: You’re welcome. You’re known as an unconventional doctor. Tell us why.
Dr. Chris: I like to stand when I work, face to face with each patient. Why do I do this? Because for example they would come to see me with lower back pain. I will ask you why do you have pain in the first place. I want to know what is the origin. And sometimes the origin is more complex than you think.
Maybe you’re doing something that your body does not like. And since your body cannot speak for itself. If it doesn’t like something you’re doing how will it let you know? Well, it could give you pain. That will get your attention, right? And what is it training to tell you? Maybe it doesn’t like the position you’re sleeping in at night. Or maybe it doesn’t like your mattress. Or maybe you’re lifting too much weight. Or maybe you’re stressed out at work or at home, which is going to give muscle spasms.
If you think anti-pain medication or anti-inflammatory, it will not fix the big problem. It will give you temporary relief. But ultimately your body will find another way to let you know that you’re doing something it doesn’t agree with. Only by exposing the deep origin of the problem and fixing it can we obtain a long lasting cure.
In my practice, in a lot of primary office care visits 80% of the people most often have symptoms due to an emotional origin, or a self-inflicted origin. My mission is to find out what this origin is.
Dr. Veronica: Absolutely amazing. At this point in my career I coach people. And so the first time people come in… First of all I don’t want to weigh or measure you. You have a bunch of other doctors that are doing that. You come in, you sit down. First thing is you’re going to fill out a bunch of papers because I want to know about you. Those papers I asked you to fill out aren’t, “Tell me about your family history, your medicines, etc.” You start off with three or four pages where you tell me about the emotional side of how your issues are impacting on you. I want to know how are you functioning. What does this mean to you? What would it be like if you don’t have this problem? Where would you be if these problems are all gone?
And then after I read about you when you come in I sit down with you. The session happens where you tell me what’s going on with you and where do you think this all began? What do you think all the problems are? Because people are right about what’s been going on. And we weave together what’s been going on. However, just allowing people to sit and tell their story which has to do with not just what’s going on with their physical illness but everything else that’s going on is therapeutic. And the relationship starts off well because all of a sudden somebody finally is listening to me.
You cannot do that in a seven or eight minute doctor’s office visit. And so people go to their doctors. They’re very angry at their doctors. And guess what, conventional doctors are wonderfully trained, and we do care. But under the current system where you have seven or eight minutes to see someone, and you have people up your behind all the time to do it a particular way, you’re going to stick with this regret.
And so people, if you want good care you have to find the doctors who are going to sit down and have the time to do that. And warning, if you want this to really happen, it’s not going to happen really well under your Medicare, Blue Cross, Blue Shield, or Aetna. I’m sorry about that. That’s the way it is. Don’t get mad at me and Dr. Gilbert about that. That’s the way it is. We’re not the one who put the system in place. You have to understand that in order for us to be able to do this we’re not going to be able to operate under the rules of the government or the insurance programs. And that’s why many of us have moved to other models for people who feel that it’s important to invest in their health. And when you invest in your health this way, doctors like me and Dr. Gilbert are able to help you much better because you stepped out and said, “This is really important to me. I’m going to figure out how to get this done. I’m going to find the doctors that can help me.”
Dr. Gilbert, I know when come in to you you ask them about their sex life. Would you like to talk about sex on this show? Because everybody’s always talking about it or focused on it from the wrong side. What do you find out? Why do you ask that question about how’s your sex life going?
Dr. Chris: Because I find that good sex is important to good health.
Dr. Veronica: Amen.
Dr. Chris: An unfulfilled sex life can lead to stress, which leads to secretion of adrenaline, C-reactive protein inflammation, cortisol, all this can cause subsequent infections, aches and pains, this is not really good.
On the other hand satisfying that gives people the love they need, the touch they need, and a little bit of physical exercise. it makes the body and the brain secrete endorphins and oxytocin, which are anti-pain and pro pleasure. It helps relieve stress and they strengthen the immune system, which prevents infection and even cancer.
Yes, I do ask people about their sex life. And sometimes I have both partners come together to my office to try to figure out how to boost their sex life so that their health can improve.
Sometimes men don’t know how to touch their wife because their wife has never told them exactly what they like. Men often have the one on and off switch, whereas women have lots of switches, lots of knobs that need to be turned a certain way. Because some men think they know but they really don’t know those details which are important for a happy sex life.
This is not too much 200 years ago because people were only living until 40 years old. But now, life expectancy has increased. And we believe that over 50% of people born after year 2000 will live past 100 years old. Having the perfect sex partner becomes now very important in the long run.
Dr. Veronica: Absolutely. This is Dr. Veronica on Wellness for the Real World. We’re on The Jersey 920AM. 920thejersey.com. I’m talking to Dr. Chris Gilbert. She is an all-around guru, physician, and has been all over the world. Her books are Dr. Chris’s A, B, C’s of Health, and The French Stethoscope. I have to ask about The French Stethoscope, but I want to find out some French secrets.
Over here in America I’m sure you’ve noticed that we are very unhealthy And one of the big unhealthy things is obesity. A lot of people are very overweight. I’ve spent enough time in France to see that French people eat good food. And a lot of people here have gluten sensitivity and things like that.
Explain to me why here in America we are having problems with gluten sensitivity in wheat and bread. Whereas when I’m going to France and I’m looking around at what people are eating it’s gluten, with good food, and fat. Everything that we tell people to restrict here they are eating in France. And the people look beautiful. Their skin is beautiful. They’re happy. You don’t see obese people. What is the secret Dr. Gilbert that we have to figure out? Give us those keys to what French people are doing.
Dr. Chris: Yes, I will. French people focus on enjoying life. In the United States we tend to focus mostly on work. Whereas in France we focus on having great hobbies, good food, good sex. We always talk about sex. But why don’t French people gain weight even though they sometimes eat five-course meals? That’s a good question.
Let’s learn about the French and let’s learn about my childhood with the way I was raised. I would go to the farmer’s market with my mom at least once a week to buy fresh fruits and vegetables. We cook at home using very little salt and sugar. Those are very important. Because in America there’s a lot of salt. A lot of people eat out and everything is very salty. The French people, they use fresh spices like Rosemary, thyme, basil, oregano, garlic, onion, cinnamon, you name it. And they use olive oil a lot.
As for drinks, they drink spring water like Evian, [Unintelligible 00:16:09], or sparkling water like [Unintelligible 00:16:13]. They drink strong coffee, but caffeine. As long as it’s under 300mg per day has been linked to better health and longevity. So the French coffees are very good. They also drink a glass of wine which for some people it’s beneficial, not everybody.
They eat slowly with friends, which allow hormones like gastrin and insulin to rise slowly. This is very important. And I did talk to patients about the way they eat or the way they cook, and the kind of hobbies they have, because that plays a very important role in health. In America a lot of people eat out and food that tastes good in restaurants, it’s very salty and very sweet.
Dr. Veronica: How do people get started on changing these little things? Because you’re talking about… You didn’t say, “You’re eating too much fat.” You talked about things like salt and sugar. But how do you get started in changing? If there’s something that you could advise, because here everybody’s on the diet fad. Because we work. We’re going to reduce everything down. But that’s not mostly what you were talking about. You were talking about an attitude and a lifestyle.
If you are recommending one step that people can take to change the attitude or lifestyle more towards what the French are enjoying what would be that advice?
Dr. Chris: It would be to get fresh foods and vegetables, and to cook. Very few people cook. And you cook without adding salt. Learn how to add fresh spices which taste so good and they’re very healthy, and have anti-inflammatory properties themselves. That would be my one advice. You could be snacking. Snack on raw carrots or raw celery, this kind of healthy food.
Dr. Veronica: Since you are saying, because I also noticed and I discourage who are coaching against this. I also noticed when I was in France that there’s very little snacking going on. You eat breakfast, lunch, dinner, and there’s very little snacking in-between. Is that usually how it is?
Dr. Chris: It is true. Because usually we have five course. Lunch is always dinner. We’re so content that we don’t need to snack in-between because the food is really, really good. But the five courses, like an appetizer would be fresh asparagus. And then the main course will be grilled chicken with zucchini. And then a mixed salad. And then a little bit of cheese. And then one food for dessert.
Dr. Veronica: I also believe when we talk about sitting down and enjoying your food we just have to back up and start doing that. Everybody says, “I’m too busy. I’m on a run.” This is what the problem would be. If you want to stay unhealthy just stay busy and don’t sit down and eat.
I notice from my husband, I never could rush him through meal time. It comes from his background where the country he’s from has a lot of French influence. And then he spent time there and his family’s there now. Every time it is time to eat we don’t do it on the run. It’s sit down. Relax. Take a break. Eat. Enjoy. Don’t do other things while you’re eating, enjoy really. Maybe sometimes the TV will be on. But a lot of times, the TV’s not on. And we’re sitting down and we’re enjoying what we’re eating.
It’s not about eating large volumes, but also, here the volumes are so big, the people eat. And I think that the French eat less because when you sit down and you do it slower, the feedback goes to your brain, finally, the way it’s supposed to, so you don’t feel like you have to eat as much. You realize that, yes, my body is satisfied. But also the food is more nutrient-rich.
But one question that I really want to ask. Why is there not a gluten problem it seems in France, but there’s a gluten problem over here in America? What’s different?
Dr. Chris: That I am not sure. I’m not sure I’m going to tell you the answer. I know that we are raised on bread. A lot of people buy the French baguette in the morning. And the bread is not complex. It’s not mixed with sugar or a lot of salt. It’s very pure wheat which is very often organic, and mixed with just a little bit or of yeast, water, and you soak, and that’s it.
Dr. Veronica: So you did give the answer. Because here everything’s GMO’ed and it’s not organic. Over there just naturally, you don’t even have to talk about it. The food supply is non-GMO and organic mostly. Just what everyday people get tends to be less processed and a better quality. And I believe that that’s the whole difference. The wheat supply is very different here than it is in France.
Dr. Chris: Yeah, absolutely. I know when I arrived in this country, I could not digest the bread here. The bread in France I would digest it very easily. Yes, this is the quality. I don’t really know is it the quality of the wheat. Is it whatever is added to the different breads here? That I’m not sure. But we’ll need to explore this more.
Dr. Veronica: I’m one of those people. I have wheat sensitivity, not all gluten. But I noticed when I go to another country like France or Italy I eat bread and it’s not problematic to me. For a while, because they’re having bread every meal and I can’t say, “I don’t eat bread because I’m wheat sensitive.” I could but that doesn’t happen. I don’t have a problem. I don’t get sick. I don’t get the aches and pains. Interesting. That’s just my experiment of one. But I believe I’ve thought about this just because I’ve had the problem here. What’s going on? Tell us a little bit about what you’re working on now.
Dr. Chris: What I’m working on, I can tell a little bit about my books. I wrote two books, Dr. Chris’s A, B, C’s of Health, and The French Stethoscope. I’m working on the third book with my fiancé, Eric Haseltine who’s a neuroscientist, which is talking about my secret techniques that allow me to get back to the origin of the problem and treat it.
For example I like to give the body a voice. I could teach people how to give their body a voice. For example you were talking about your stomach. If it could have a voice what would it say? We could try an experiment right now. If your stomach Dr. Veronica could have a voice what would it say? Does it feel empty? Does it feel full? That’s what I’m working on. And I’m working on doing a third book of that.
Dr. Veronica: You say about two secrets your doctor would never tell you. I don’t want you to tell this was in Psychology Today. Go to Psychology Today and look up the Two Secrets Your Doctor Will Never Tell You. Dr. Gilbert, what is one of those secrets? We have about two minutes for you to tell us one of those secrets.
Dr. Chris: My secrets are doctors are usually very stressed out. And they can make mistakes. Typically, as you said before they have 15 minutes per patient. So 15 minutes to say hello, to share your complaints, examine you, make a diagnosis, a treatment plan, write a prescription, and type everything on their medical records. This is very little time.
You need to help your doctor help you. And I like to teach people how to do that. You need to come in the office with a summary of your history already written. And you need to have the list of your medications already typed on a piece of paper for the exact names and doses of what you’re thinking.
Also, I like people to know what kind of X-ray has been prescribed to them, what kind of blood test is prescribed. I recommend people to ask for a copy of their results. Because, again, doctors have made mistakes, and sometimes a result that would not be normal will be overlooked by a physician. When you get a copy of your results, you can show it to another physician and you know exactly what you have.
I also like people to ask for the name of the medication their doctor is prescribing, and what the dose is. Because sometimes the pharmacy will make a mistake and would deliver the wrong medication at the wrong dose. People need to know that medical mistakes are the third leading cause of death in the United States. With 1.3 million medical mistakes per year there are 400,000 deaths per year from medical mistakes. My mission as a physician is to prevent this and to help people as much as I can. That’s why I’m telling you those secrets.
Dr. Veronica: Help your doctor help you. Thank you for saying that Dr. Gilbert. People come in to the office. We haven’t been told how to be prepared. So now you know when you walk into your doctor’s office how to help the doctor help you. You come in with those pieces of information and you just hand it to your doctor. Your doctor’s going to hug and kiss you for giving them information so they don’t have to ask and look for it, and get it all over again. And then you get more time, and they can be more efficient.
